The UN’s top court ordered Israel to “take all measures” to prevent genocide in Gaza, but stopped short of calling for Israel to suspend its military campaign in the war-torn enclave.

In a hearing in The Hague, the Netherlands, on Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said Israel must limit the death and destruction caused by its military campaign, as well as prevent and punish incitement to genocide, and to ensure the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

South Africa had accused Israel of violating international laws on genocide in its war in Gaza, and wanted the Court to order a halt in fighting.

Friday’s decision related only to South Africa’s request for emergency measures, which act like a restraining order while the Court considers the full merits of the genocide case, which could take years.

    So basically they said Israel must do everything they can to prevent genocide except to stop‽ Perhaps the world decides to tell them to knock it the fuck off officially, use the good letterhead too.

    Here’s an idea.

    “I’m the United States of America. If you genocide those people, we will genocide you. You cannot stop us because we’re way the fuck bigger than you and won’t have any backlash from our population for this one.”

    Say that. Make sure they hear you. I’m calling out our president.

      In this case, the court is referencing Article II of the Genocide Convention which has a broader definition:

      https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/genocide.shtml

      "In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

      a) Killing members of the group;
      b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
      c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
      d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
      e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."

      So for Israel vs. Palestine you have a, b, and c.

      For Russia vs. Ukraine you have a, b, c, and e.
