“You know, I’m something of a Federation enjoyer myself”

No! I will not do what the (Bottom Text Here) says!!!
Honestly I wish I was surprised but I’m not. I am so blackpilled about humanity its not even funny… the general masses really do fuck everything up, they accept things for what they are, like Netflix password sharing, look at how well that’s going for Netflix. The masses will accept anything if they get a little dopamine hit. Doesn’t mean I won’t stop fighting for a better future, I’m just somewhat disillusioned.
Yeah I suppose thats true, I was very much in a different mental state when I left, so much so I deleted my account, one person I was good friends with checked in with my phone number and made sure I was okay. I only wanted to share my experience because some others viewing might be in a similar state I was in, terrified of technology and *almost left it all behind. I have very good people though and I couldnt be more thankful. :)
Thank you for the kind words! Stay safe, friend.
I left way more than once, so leaving several times and expecting people to accept you again and again sounds like a chore and not everyone is going to keep accepting you.
Thank you :) From one internet surfer to another, your comment was acknowledged and very appreciated. I wish social media wasn’t as prevalent as it currently is, but still nonetheless I appreciate the kind words and the time you took to write! <3
While I love the sentiment, I have to say leaving Discord was one of the worst choices I ever made, not because Discord is inherently better, but because of the friends on it. I was in a very different state mentally and left without warning, and I regret it everyday, even though I’m back on Discord and some of my friends were willing to accept me, I still get a very intense feeling that what I did was unforgivable and I shouldn’t be given this chance to talk with them again. It feels like leaving someone waiting for a high five and returning it months later when the hype is gone… I’m mostly inactive because I feel so wrong and I really don’t deserve friends that are so nice. While I made the choice to leave and I knew the consequences, I don’t wish anyone else to make that same mistake, leave with confidence, not with a cloudy mindset, worsening depression, and way less friends.
I feel the same pains with Signal, I was very lucky in the sense that basically everyone I needed to communicate with would join, however a few members, mostly my brother which is known to be very much a stick in the mud wouldn’t join. While I love him to death, he can be very much a pain to bargain with. Maybe someday…
For the most part yes, I would say anything mainstream is generally made its way to lemmy, however some niche subs like r/hamradio r/gmrs and some gaming subreddits like r/fireemblem and r/finalfantasy seem to be missing. Honestly I’m surprised even 90+% of the communities I follow are on here, I’m quite hopeful that it’ll continue to get better.
Somewhat off-topic but I love this meme template so much
For all the faults Google glass had, at least they were similar in size to regular glasses. I would only consider these things if they were as non-intrusive as possible, aka not ski goggles
I’ve got my popcorn ready for whatever happens down there.
100% agree, I kinda hope they keep it in a way because its probably better than most standard captchas.
Yes and thats true aswell, some instances aren’t connected to one another so that might be an issue for someone just picking a random instance. The solution is quite simple though, make it clear in the join-lemmy page the federation status, or have a link to all the banned instances the admins have put in place. Overall I’m still very hopeful and worried about the coming days, this community has already grown but its not over yet.
#1 Same with a lot of new social media, discord actually meant something different before 2015
#2 They don’t need to at a technical level
#3 If you find it challenging to decide which server to join then I really don’t know what to tell you. Its a small barrier to entry and objectively a good thing. An small IQ test of sorts.
#4 I’d imagine this is for spam / bot protection, and it may change in the future. I kinda like it, it keeps a lot of toxic users / trolls out. Sure the community is smaller but its more inviting for those that took the time.
#5 How is that different from reddit? View r/all at anytime and it was composed of left wing articles and users.
#6 Not 100% sure what your arguing here
#7 I actually find the idea of similar communities on different instances confusing (eg. [email protected] & !memes@beehaw)
edit: spelling
edit 2: it may be a little confusing to users that all servers can talk to eachother through federation so thats probably what confuses people. This could be explained better on the join-lemmy webpage. either way this will probably be similar to mastadon in terms of how it’ll go down, lots of users join, instances have a hard time keeping up at first, then they stabilize.
I do have to wonder if Reddit knows something we don’t… This is… wayyy too much to ignore. I assume they’ve done analysis of the worse cases and mass user departure. The only reason I can assume they’re not backing down is due to the very high upfront costs of Reddit. Less users = less costs which theoretically means more profit. You have a very good point, and its something all Lemmy server owners need to be prepared for, which is a huge influx of users joining on the blackouts, even then, it may not be enough, unintentional DDOS attacks are still DDOS attacks. This is a golden opportunity of a lifetime for Lemmy, but I fear with even a 10th of Reddits current userbase, Lemmy admins won’t be able to keep up… I feel for all the developers and admins that make Lemmy possible, and I really hope it goes well for everyone involved. Donate to server admins and the main project if you have a few dollars spare, or if anyone is comfortable with coding I’m sure they need some devs.
Yeah as a lurker on Reddit (I use libreddit) I really wanna see some change for the better, Fediverses’ seem to be the future, we just need to get the general masses aware of its presence :)
I hate to say this, but this is a blessing in full view. If people want the “freedom” to not take a vaccine because “risks, 5G mind control, whatever” then let’s let them. Life is full of risks and they need a wakeup call.
