Introvert. Anime lover. Gamer.
Talkative to some, silent to others. Long term Apollo user and had to move post reddit’s apocalypse circa July 1, 2023
In fairness. i don’t consider myself tech adept, I don’t know how to run a server but I know the importance of privacy and open source. Maybe take it as a good thing that these are being openly talked about here, otherwise the mistakes of reddit will just be repeated. Supporting closed source is a ticking time bomb.
Companies can and will betray you in the name of profit.
On to privacy and security, they ARE important. You have no idea how many people lost money in their banks or have to deal with lengthy lawsuits and procedures just to get their life back after someone impersonated them by stealing their data or ID.
In our area, OTP scams are very rampant. And people constantly fall victim to random calls asking for OTP and other details ; then have their banks withdrawn huge amount of money precisely because the issue of security and privacy aren’t openly being talked about.
Please don’t take it as a negative, but a good thing that these types of things are being discussed.
As a popular quote (paraphrased) says “those who fail to learn the past is doomed to constantly repeat it.”
We don’t want another reddit or twitter.
People are still healing from reddit’s bad decisions. Let them mourn. Let them be angry, let them go through the stages of grief in their own pace.
Hmmm, on the bright side, with lemmy going mainstream maybe some of this culture (including privacy and FOSS) becomes more and more openly discussed.
Trading one master for another, I see.
You have better eyes than me. :)
No, the fire’s still burning. As long as reddit keeps making news, people will keep talking. :)
Ahh if that’s the case, then I have no sympathy to those who choose to stay. They deserve whatever half baked idiocy reddit will throw at them.
peeks at comments
Mildly disappointed that no one mentioned leaving reddit for lemmy, but also mildly impressed at the level of commitment of these redditors.
Lol as an all-in apple guy (with iphone, ipad, mac, and a die hard airdrop fan), I’m mostly amused. But not at all offended. Win11 is a disaster. So I’m perfectly happy simping for Mac. XD
Hmm, I posted in Games and I haven’t have problems so far knocks on wood.
Well if your interest aligns with some of the communities I moderate, feel free to join in. I have a game related one that’s relatively new but mostly positive.
Feel free to look around my profile if you’re feeling bored.
Oh and don’t take this the wrong way, but the apple thing was maybe to be expected
What community are you subscribed to?
Generally, my experience was welcoming with long posts and orderly discussion.
If that’s the strategy, is the loss of trust really worth it? How would they entice users back when all the 3rd party apps has shut down?
Threads got to me late. The moment it was advertised, I’m in too deep the lemmy hole.
It might go either way but it’s a good start. A loss is still a loss and those lost users will find new homes, hopefully in the fediverse. Even if it doesn’t cause an outright bankruptcy, anything to help promote a freer internet is good in my book.
A well deserved outcome. Companies need to realize that they are nothing without their customers/users. An undeserved arrogance can only lead to eventual downfall.
This is the level of transparency that most companies should strive for. Ironic that in terms of fixing things, volunteer and passion projects seem to be more on top of issues compared to big companies with hundreds of employees.
Yey! Glad it worked. You’re very much welcome there, though not a lot of post at the moment, unfortunately. But we’ll get there :)
So I did some digging. And I found this
Once you have the names of the magazines you would like to subscribe to, the easiest way I found was to just open a text file and create a bunch of lines with the following syntax:
https://[your instance]/c/[kbin magazine name]@[kbin instance]
So since you’re on lemmy.world, say you wanted to subscribe to gaming on kbin.social and firefox on fedia.io. You would sign into lemmy.world, paste in the following URLs, and click subscribe:
So in your case, try
Note I haven’t tried this myself. Just saw the instruction at:
https://lemmy.fakecake.org/post/23807
Aww that’s unfortunate. I don’t know why it wouldn’t show up if kbin and lemmy is naturally federated. My best guess would be the slow downs and the upsurge of users in lemmy.world has somewhat affected federation. Though I have no way of monitoring this because I don’t have kbin :(
Beehaw’s limited registration will turn off many users and eventually instances with open registration will catch up.
