Gifs are extremely efficient though. There is only downloading and no decoding necessary to play it back so it has no impact on your CPU. If you have a screen full of 1000 GIFs then your CPU won’t start melting. Try playing 1000 video files on your computer no matter how small they are.
However, there is no reason for a 50mb GIF to exist. If you actually have something that is longer than a few seconds you should not use GIF.

That isn’t a good justification to me. If it’s ok for you then it’s ok for the rest of the world too. You might believe ads aren’t bad and that’s fine. At least we can agree to disagree on that as our opinions aren’t reconcilable. If your app can’t exist without ads then I don’t believe it should exist at all. Or any other software in the world.
Put it simply I just hate ads. Anything that puts in ads is terrible. Including Sync for Lemmy who seems to have completely missed the point of getting the hell away from Reddit.
The next terrible thing is automatically generated content and bots, but I guess those are also really just ads.
I block all communities that post news. I’ve never seen somewhere to enter text filters like this. Not sure I’d want to anyway.

It’s nice how fast Lemmy is growing, but I think it is a good idea to manage expectations. In the world of free and open source software you can’t just throw money at the problem to make it better. The development of Lemmy will occur at will whenever someone feels like contributing. It’s not someones job to develop Lemmy so it isn’t guaranteed to happen at all.
Edit: Just for clarification I’m not suggesting to not donate. I’m just saying donating doesn’t guarantee development.
For sure. I don’t mind moderating on Lemmy because nobody is making any money here. I’m doing something because I want to. However, I’m not going to do something even if I want to if someone else is making money from my efforts and not giving my me fair share. Whatever that may be.
Probably just fools. Working for a corporation that makes money from your work without sharing any of it with them. Nobody should be moderating on Reddit without getting paid.

I’ve never really heard of this concept as I come skipped straight here from forums 15 years ago. People wrote posts about things they were interested in and people discussed it. Very rarely did someone simply post a link to another website with no comments of their own. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
I wish people wouldn’t use Lemmy as a “link aggregator”. Instead of posting links to other peoples content how about having an original thought for once. Why is Lemmy acting as the comments section for some other website?
Probably not because the home feed has existed without issue for years with my history turned off. This change only exists to convince people to turn their history on. I don’t know why they even need our permission rather than just removing it as an option to have it off, but I’m glad I can.

The fact that there is an ad version at all as a UI front end to an ad free FOSS back-end is a bit shameful. People buy it because they want to get rid of the ads. If they just sold the software with no free with ad version then they would be acceptable.
It’s not about the cost. It’s the principle of the matter.

Sync comes in last for having ads unfortunately. Or basically just disqualified.
I get the impression that people are for some reason uncomfortable with the concept of FOSS (Free and Open Source Sofwatre). Like they are not getting inundated with ads or things constantly asking them to give them money while getting something of value for free. They need to start inventing ways to bring money into the system so they can be comfortable again.
Things are working just fine and there is nothing to worry about.
It can be an argument if you want, but it seems more like a discussion to me. I refute the idea that gifs are horrible and obsolete. You even give a use case in your post. If I have a 1 second looping image I’d much rather use a gif than a video format. So I believe they should work on Lemmy. The rest of the internet has no problem supporting this format.
