Relatively few musicians are counting dollar bills. Publishers are, Spotify and the tech-bros who have inserted themselves between musicians and their fans are. But the musicians writing protest music are busking on TikTok in the evenings after working day jobs to afford rent. I hate to recommend a sinking ship, but unironically, if you are looking for music about the current moment, it’s on TikTok. Some of it makes it’s way to other platforms, but the average person won’t find it because music discovery on the mainstream music platforms is curated by corporations who are out to make money for the big record labels.

Dirtier than the ones I’ve been to within the last couple of years, but I’m also comparing a Wichita KS area Steak-N-Shake to Seward and Columbus Nebraska Amigos/King Classic - so maybe not the most fair comparison.

The thing is, I think our attention spans are too cooked to be overwhelmed like that anymore. A new crisis every 20 minutes? I can get through 40+ tiktok videos in that time, and half of them will be about something they are trying to terrify with (trans rights, science defunding, bird flu, racism, palestine, the oligarchy, luigi, etc.)

The old media can’t keep up, but I’m in my mid-thirties and even my old brain can handle being pulled in dozens of directions and still think about/remember Luigi, unprompted, multiple times a day.

Probably not a great option considering how Nightreign is built around online multiplayer more than any other Fromsoft game. I guess there’s maybe a chance for a selfhosted multiplayer server, but otherwise the likelihood of a pirated version actually working seems slim.

Glad they clarified. To me the “selling data being defined broadly” argument made sense in the context of Google paying them to be included as a search provider. Because there is an argument that Google paying Firefox, and then the user entering a search and that being sent to Google’s servers could be legally seen as Mozilla selling data to Google.

When I first got a Bluesky account, back when it was invite-only a whole bunch of the Physicists and Astronomers I used to follow on Twitter were already there. If anything it seemed like scientists were early adopters.

To each their own I guess. But maybe there should be an instance that sets their default theme to something that feels more modern so those who want a simpler, less usable, experience can easily have that too.

And yeah, they’d probably become the new instance everyone complains about for being too “normie” but if we actually want the fediverse to catch on and take down corporate-owned social media, we are eventually gonna have to appeal to every part of those sites’ user bases.

Another common thing I’ve seen is people paying cash for the nice thing they can’t really afford and then realizing they can’t afford necessities like groceries and then those end up going on the credit card.

Most of my original point was that there should be weight classes. I’m well aware there aren’t currently. Perhaps I didn’t make that point clearly enough.

Look, I get that there are limits on how many teams you can feasibly have, but there are also plenty of smaller dudes who never play sports because they’d also get mauled. It’s also not a huge mental leap to think that maybe some coaches/administrators might deliberately try to get the girls to give up and be “out of their hair.” Not saying that happened in your anecdote, it may have genuinely been a well-meaning attempt at inclusivity by everyone involved. But it’s also not super relevant if there wasn’t also an attempt to balance it by weight - something that has already been shown to lower injury rates and severity for existing players if we would do it.

Comparatively underdeveloped brains? Testicles precariously placed for maximum injury? I’ll give you that members of the female gender commonly have looser/stretchier skin and potentially lower muscle density.

But also the girls I grew up with, grew faster and were taller than the boys at the same age. Eventually we caught up, but there was a period in there where playing sports against the girls my age gave them an advantage. Maybe 200,000+ years of human evolution already mostly solved this problem, and it’s not actually about protecting children, but being an asshole to trans kids.

While I personally believe trans athletes should be allowed to compete in any league of their choice or at least the league most closely matching the gender they present as, there is a part of me that would also like open-gendered sports in general. I have a theory that the “women are weaker, and would get crushed in leagues with men” is misogyny seeing only disadvantages and none of the advantages women athletes have (more complete brain development during their prime athletic years, etc.) If you are actually concerned about injury, then go by weight class, which could help save smaller men from severe injury as well.

I do also wonder just how much keeping sports gendered is just done to protect male egos from being styled on by women.

On the topic of fentanyl, if I may be so bold as to ask, do that many Americans genuinely give a shit about any fentanyl coming across any of our borders? I suppose those who do drugs that are likely to be cut with fentanyl, but as an American whose drug use consists of at most alcohol and legal weed, fentanyl isn’t something I’m particularly worried about. I’m not saying it’s not destructive or dangerous, but it’s not something I ever feel worried about. Maybe I’m just too poor to be exposed to people who do the kind of drugs that get laced with fentanyl, or maybe I’m lacking more empathy than I realize, but while I’ve seen sad examples of people whose lives have been destroyed by opiates and fentanyl in news programs and documentaries, I also have a hard time not seeing the fear of Fentanyl as anything more than wealthy parents like Trump, who know their kids are doing cocaine or other drugs, worried that their kids (like Don Jr) will accidentally OD on some laced drugs, which again, maybe it’s an empathy problem on my part, but maybe if you aren’t smart enough to test your drugs maybe you shouldn’t be doing them. I don’t know, it just seems like dhe dumbest issue to tank the whole economy over (unless that was the goal all along, and you just want a boogeyman-scapegoat for an excuse). It’s not that I even really care about “the economy” that much either, but I do care about ordinary people being able to afford housing and food.

Problem is, we can’t just skip to that part of the story without being accused of being just like the J6 crowd. I hate what is happening, and don’t want to say there’s nothing that can be done, but unfortunately there’s a bunch of people who aren’t gonna wake up and get it until it hurts them personally.

For now, probably the best thing we can do is stand up for those in their crosshairs and support them however we can, while we wait for a bunch of the anti-woke crowd to wake up to the fact that they voted for the leopard that’s eating their face. Now, there should definitely be a limit on how long we wait for them to wake up, but at the speed this leopard is going? I doubt anyone will be unscathed by Spring.

To add to that, even though Trump complains about how the “mainstream media” treats him, in reality he has the actual mainstream media on his side (Joe Rogan, etc). Saw someone bring up a statistic the other day that pointed out that as far as audience reach: Kamala Harris would have had to appear on CNN, Fox, and MSNBC for 3 hours every night for two weeks, during prime time, to have the same reach Trump got from going on Joe Rogan.

Obviously that comparison is to cable channels rather than the broadcast channels the FCC has more authority to “investigate,” but the allegations of “unfairness” are entirely out of touch with modern reality.

Isn’t it kinda wild that we went from “wake up sheeple” being a pretty universal meme used across the political spectrum, to today where “being woke” which basically grew out of that meme is essentially considered a political ideology?

I saw a tiktok of a Brit talking about this with the upcoming ban in the US, and he made an interesting point. The Americans who can afford to travel and take time off work, are more often the ones who have lived privileged lives, and as a result act more entitled than the average American. He commented how interacting with regular Americans on tiktok changed his perception of what they are like, because only interacting with the tourists makes it seem like there’s a higher percentage of entitled a-holes.
