  • I’m not pretending anything and you’re putting words in my mouth I never said or intentionally misenterpreting my words and I’m done with this bad faith argument of yours.

I’m not Mike Johnson and acknowledging discrimination doesn’t make me privileged. You can discriminate all you want it doesn’t make it any less discrimination. Nor does it make discrimination against someone even if they might be privileged any less discrimination.

If you really think someone who just happens to have been born those things and gets the worst treatment than someone who, say is, POC and/or LGBTQ, who is better off than someone who is homeless for example you’re delusional and extremely discriminative. It largely concerns all of those things, but it’s not as bipolar as american identity politics makes it up to be, it’s more about class politics and politics essentially and way more subjective and individual than you’re making it out to be - which is exactly my point, not a single one of any gender, sexuality, class, anything is a fucking monolith you should discriminate against as one. But you’re free to downvote instead of discussing.

  • But that’s at least partially my point. That’s discrimination, not all white people, not all straight people, not all men, are privileged and if you think that you’re reinforcing the same discrimation you’re supposedly against. Sure, there might be, proportionally, because of historical reasons/historical discrimination, more “straight white men” who are more privileged than most, but that’s more about politics and thinking that way you are already discriminating against people just for being born the skin color they’re born with, the sexuality and gender they’re born with which we all know we have no control over. And that’s fucked up.

If you really think there are no white or straight people or men that don’t have the same privileges as some piece of shit like this guy or even a bunch of minority people I really cannot trust you’re arguing in good faith. Class etc, privilege isn’t all about the color of your skin or sexuality. Things are more subjective and inidividual than that.

I agree it makes this turd of a human being more of a hypocrite and I don’t disagree with the comment I replied to entirely. I just don’t see why there is a need to discriminate against an entire group of people just for the way they’re born. I thought fighting against that very notion was the exact point.

e: Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point and possibly not explaining my point well (I am veeery tired), but anyway. Just because Mike Johnson is an asshole doesn’t mean people should paint an entire gender or race or anything as assholes is my point. I get that the OC is somewhat sarcastic, but still.

  • I mean that’s my point. I’d trust Reddit more than some completely random dude to handle my data you know? Why wouldn’t I? At least with a centralized datamining piece of shit I know a part of what the data is used for and they’re not just stalking me waiting to murder me or something. Blindly sharing whatever with some rando who just comes up to you like “hey you want some privacy” is just fucking weird. Some random dude could be any weird fucked up person you know? Maybe I’m over/underthinking this, but sometimes all of this just seems weird.

  • Thanks for the thorough reply. I’m just wondering, in general, about privacy and shit. Like it’s a big talking point here, how lemmy is so much safer and privacy focused, but then there are these huge oversights regarding some things. Sure it’s great my shit isn’t being monetized for bullshit reasons and ends and ads, but, if all this kind of decentralized thing doesn’t come without it’s own problems. It’s fairly new territory for most people and people easily lull into a comfort you know?

I’m paranoid rambling, but thanks for the reply.

  • That’s easy: the mix of puke, stomach acid, bits of whatever you last ate and the last couple of drinks and beer/wine you had, because you’re damn sure not wasting that precious alcohol!

Another one: the room temp leftovers of all the beers and other drinks from the night/weekend poured into a pint when you’re cleaning up. The Hangover Special! Yummy. Bonus points if there’s a cigarette/joint butt in there somewhere that you fish out because you didn’t notice someone had used that can as an ashtray. Delicious!

  • And then you have examples of bands like Oranssi Pazuzu that kind of have achieved a similar thing to Led Zeppelin where they can be a lot of things across an album and throughout their discography but still very much retain their sound because they’ve always kind of incorporated influences from all over ito their sound and just making it their own. I wouldn’t say they have ever been scared to “veer off” out of their fairly specific genrehole even if they have their sound throughout. It’s tricky.

  • True, but some genres just kinda are like that with a lot of bands. Metal and punk especially. I don’t a 100% agree that it’s always being scared of experimenting/veering off, but just kind of the nature of the genre for a lot of bands. And even then you have examples of bands still retaining “their sound”. Sure it’s not metal, but punk, but I think Fugazi have quite a certain sound even though they evolved a lot.

From that another great example and one of my favorites: Bad Brains! Any of their songs could’ve been on any of their albums and it would not have been out of place.

Metal and punk are very similar in ways though so I excuse myself not thinking of metal examples.

Like I’d say Deathspell Omega sounds have retained their sound in many ways, but they’ve kind of evolved their thing so much you couldn’t really say they have just that specific sound. Where as Deströyer 666 still have the same sound even though they’ve changed quite a bit, but you could go on forever about outliers. I don’t remember what my point was.

Having said all that I wish more metal and punk bands tried something more different sometimes.

  • Led Zeppelin stayed roughly the same, but they had all kinds of influences mixed in from the start to sustain their sound and not get tired.

High on Fire to an extent. Matt Pike is an absolute riff machine and it seemed like every album up til sobriety was just a banger of an album after the other.

Primus I kind of think too, just because they have a very unique sound due to Les’s Residentsy vocals and his bass style.

The Smiths? The Fall! Sonic Youth as well. Elliott Smith.

I think it kind of depends on how much you allow and what you see as their sound. You can always find examples and some difference in sound, but for many bands and artists it’s more song to song or even producer dependent.

Hell I’d chuck in a band like Kyuss as well, most post-Kyuss projects John Garcia was involved with still sound like Kyuss because he was a massive part of the sound, listen to Slo Burn or Unida and tell me you don’t hear Kyuss.

A lot of artists change more drastically, like you can tell if some song is by Nick Cave, but there’s a huge difference from album to album, where as The Birthday Party though kind of had a specific sound they stuck to as well even if they explored it a little.

Ooh and Judas Priest in a big way, Motörhead too to an extent.

    Good question!
