  • Adams knows it won’t be easy running as a Democrat for the House in the deep red northwestern corner of Montana. The district covers northern Lincoln County, a mecca for militia members or sympathizers and doomsday preppers. Republican Donald Trump won 74% of the county vote in the 2020 presidential race.

While Adams’ campaign may look like a fruitless undertaking, he doesn’t see it that way. For him it’s a chance to tell his own story — that of an “honest weirdo” who emerged from a traumatic childhood to find his own way in life. It’s also a chance to make the case for his own vision of how democracy and personal responsibility intertwine.

You never truly know whether somebody would be good or not ahead of time, but I initially feel good about a person who is interested in politics who seems to actually think of themselves as “honest”.

  • “Punching down” also indicates that he thinks he’s somehow on a different level from them. So, it should mean, for example, that he’s making fun of comedians who are less successful than him. Or maybe it means he’s making fun of people who have less money than him.

But, there’s likely a trans person out there who has more money than him, so what does he actually mean? He’s the one quoted in this special as saying “I love punching down!” Those are his words that he chose. Is he saying that he’s inherently better than a trans person or a disabled person?

It used to be popular for white people to think they were inherently better than black people. Talk about a lack of perspective.

  • Just to make it crystal clear, a Christian who is being inaugurated as President will swear a solemn oath, almost certainly with their hand on the Bible, to defend the Constitution.

Joe Biden, like every President before him, including Trump, swore a solemn oath not to do what John Schneider is insisting upon.

If a President elect believed what Schneider is suggesting, he would either be unable to take the oath of office, and thus could not ever be President, or he would swear to God that he was telling the truth when he was lying.

  • If you’ve been to Reddit since the API meltdown, it’s pretty clear that large sections of it were fucked by angry moderators, and still remain that way. I don’t think the fediverse was ready to take over, but Reddit very clearly has fewer people working for them for free.

Specifically, there are several subreddits where they used to be strict about submissions, and now they let anything mildly related in.

I’m honestly pretty surprised that they still haven’t recovered. At this point, I’m hoping that their mediocrity will continue to push people away until Lemmy can catch up.

  • So high level overview is that Strickland was an ultra MAGA bishop who strongly supported Trump, and has publicly stated that he’d refuse the normal method for a bishop to be removed, in which he is asked to resign.

There’s also this anecdote from the article:

Last year, when the Vatican defrocked ultra-conservative U.S. anti-abortion priest Frank Pavone for “blasphemous” social media posts and disobedience to bishops, Strickland was one of the few American bishops to defend him publicly.

“The blasphemy is that this holy priest is canceled while an evil president promotes the denial of truth and the murder of the unborn at every turn, Vatican officials promote immorality and denial of the deposit of faith and priests promote gender confusion devastating lives…evil,” Strickland wrote on the platform then known as Twitter.

So basically, Strickland joined one of the most authoritarian organizations in the world, the Catholic Church, and then refused to obey the Pope, instead choosing to worship fucking Donald Trump, of all people, all the while calling President Biden and even the Vatican “evil.”

Sounds like this man was far too stupid to be in such a position of power. Just another idiot who sacrificed himself for a rich con man.

  • I don’t care what Vox says. I wasn’t talking about the article. Just the video. They didn’t make the video. In fact, I only mentioned the video in my comment, and your response completely ignored it.

And just to make the point as obvious as possible, you were asking what you wouldn’t learn about as well in China, and here you can see people who are afraid their government will punish them for talking about it.

It’s obvious that in an environment like that, either people are misinformed due to their government, or they’re informed in spite of their government. Either way, it doesn’t look good for the government.

It’s a hard counter to your original statement.
