Fuck billionaires, fuck CEOs, fuck Elon Musk, Fuck AI, fuck capitalism, fuck reddit, fuck nazies, fuck SUVs, fuck ads, fuck republicans, fuck twitter, fuck facebook, fuck Trump, fuck Israel, fuck google, fuck enshittification, fuck Apple, fuck police …

Complain, complain complain. That’s what you people do here all day every day. That’s even what I’m doing right now. Jesus Christ no wonder we all feel like shit all the time. This is the most miserable and cynical circle jerk I’ve ever participated in.

And yet you chose to add to the negativity instead of opposing it.

Communities are what you make them.

Passion communities is where you’ll find what you’re looking for. I fully understand what you are talking about though. I participate in this way, lots of the time. However, communities where people are showing off their creations or talking about a shared interest (not of anything controversial) is more often where you’ll find the calmer places you’re looking for. The front page of Lemmy, much like reddit, is full of fear and arguments.

Fear porn generates clicks and sells ad space.

I mean… I’ve blocked probably over a thousand users and communities in total and I have content filters for much of what I just listed there but the front page is still negative as hell. I can only imagine what the unfiltered version of that looks like.

I agree that the niche communities are much more pleasant but unfortunelately they’re also extremely quiet. There’s not enough going on in there to keep me entertained for much more than 10 minutes a day. I’ve recently started going back to reddit for that. There are niche subs there than are more active than Lemmy as a whole.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

How about you spend time bettering yourself instead of consuming content and bitching?

            Learn a hobby, exercise, etc.

I think [email protected] is pretty neat. A setting with webs of overlapping political intrigue that shifts between different eras, all driven by conflicts where big stompy mechs are used to fight. It’s got decades of different miniatures behind the actual game, and the game itself is very rules crunchy. The small number of mechs needed to play makes it quite accessible compared to other wargames that need more of an investment.

[email protected] is another setting, probably more well known in the current mainstream. A huge variety of factions to choose from. It is the default game of any game store so you’re sure to be able to find other people to play with.

[email protected] is a setting that’s had a lot of controversy, but I personally like focusing on all of the great parts of it. I’m currently reading through some old EU books and really enjoying them.

There’s nothing wrong with controlling / filtering the things you allow into your news feed.

Yes, there is a need to stay informed, but TBH the only immediate things one really needs are:

    • a weather radio [Canada] [US] to alert of impending doom from volcanic eruption, inclement weather, earthquake or civil unrest
    • local weather forecast
    • local traffic & news

All of which can be accomplished without a Twitter, Reddit or Fediverse news feed.

You can’t function if you’re in a bad headspace. If you need to restrict your news intake, not only is that OK, but it is at times required and healthy.

So you’ve noticed it too. I’ve also noticed that there’s too much black or white world view here, and no middle ground. It’s tiring.

I’ve found myself visiting less and less.

Agree. We, the people here, are malcontents by definition (who left the other place) and boy does it show. And a lot of autism and pedanticness.

And you can have a normal conversation, but then you say one thing that doesn’t fully align with the groupthink and the conversation turns toxic really quick.

With all due respect, there’s more in the direction you mention, but there’s more in the direction of opposing views, as well. This was the entire point of moving to the Fediverse: to get away from the restrictions and whims of u/spez and Big Tech.

Keep looking around and talking to other people. This is a better place than Reddit: you just haven’t stumbled upon all of the evidence yet. ;)
