Hi everyone,

I recently got a PS5 and I’m loving it so far. However, I’ve run into a problem when I tried to watch TV shows that I’ve downloaded onto a USB drive. The Media Gallery on PS5 doesn’t play copyright-protected files.

I’m curious about how exactly copyrighted videos get detected on the PS5 and if there’s any workaround. I find it odd that I can play videos downloaded from YouTube but not ones from other sources.

What file extension are you trying to play? The copyright detection is simply derived from the video file metadata and its signature is checked against a database.

Just purge the metadata with a video file conversion tool on your PC, and also stay away from whatever you download that copyrighted pirated media from because it’s clear that they didn’t bother to do that in the first place which is a red flag and are a honeypot for morons.

Is that all they’re doing now? I haven’t used a ps for media since I think the ps3, which had that system that it would shut off the sound.

Cinavia! Allegedly it’s still around and mandated in all consumer Blu-ray players.

If you have the ability using Plex on the ps5 to stream your media to it is quite nice too

Imagine buying hardware that doesn’t let you use your software, lol.
